In Loving Memory

16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son."
John 3:16-18
New International Version

Brett Alexander Yarberry, age 23, of Pueblo, Colorado passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2020. Brett was born January 6, 1997.

He is survived by parents Bob and Janelle Yarberry; sister: Janie Hernandez (JJ); Nephew: Aries (Buddy) Hernandez; maternal Grandmother Diana Troute; paternal Grandparents David and Gaynee Yarberry; maternal Aunt Jody Duren (Robert); paternal Uncle Scott Yarberry (Jo Anna); paternal Uncle Ken Yarberry (Catherine); and by several cousins.

During Elementary, Brett was very active in YMCA sports, including T-Ball baseball, Machine Pitch baseball, basketball, and indoor soccer. He then moved on to Corwin International Magnet School, the only International Baccalaureate middle school in southern Colorado! Brett graduated from Pueblo East High School in 2015, where he had been active in his school’s Cross Country & Track and excelled in Math and Gym classes. Brett studied Electrical Engineering at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology from 2015 until 2018 before moving to Colorado State University, Pueblo to study Mechatronics. He was employed at the South Side Walmart from November 2019 until his passing.

  • Brett loved playing with his nephew, Buddy!
  • He was a Rubik’s cube master and an avid bowler. He started on bowling at the age of 5 at Pinelli’s Bowlero Lanes in Pueblo. Most recently, he bowled on the Adult Monday Madness Bowling League.
  • He enjoyed playing Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh, watching anime, and participating in various Roll Playing Games at Chaos Entertainment.

Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Scouts. Brett earned his at the age of 17 when he was a member of Troop 30. The community project he took on in order to achieve this honor was helping to completely repaint and clean three of the bathrooms at his church (with the help he was able to rope in from his trusty crew!)

Brett was a Brotherhood Member of the Tupwee Lodge of the Rocky Mountain Council. Inducted members were a part of the Order of the Arrow — the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts, composed of Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives as elected by their peers.

Brett was an active and life-long member of First Presbyterian Church of Pueblo:

  • LUVLife Youth Group
  • Chancel Ringers Bell Choir
  • Jesus Jammer Youth Band (bass for 4 years)
  • Access Worship (Tech Support)

Brett has been shaving his head  for the St Baldrick’s Foundation to raise money to help fight childhood cancer since he was 6 years old.  He has received the title of Sir Brett Yarberry, Knight Commander for over a decade of caring. To make a donation in his name, please click below.

Fun Stories About Brett

  • We first went to Disneyland when Brett was 4. After getting Snow White's autograph, he said “She's Pretty!”
  • In 5th grade, he was in a school play as a cow and his only line was “Got Milk?”
  • During his 5th grade field day at school, there was a 5th Grader's vs. Parents kick ball game. Bob told Brett to kick it to him and he did for an out at first! Rare case of obedience...
  • 6th Grade School Belching Contest Winner!
  • Brett played Catcher on his Machine Pitch baseball team. The batter hit the ball straight up and Brett could not see it. He blindly stuck his glove out and the ball landed in it for an out!
  • Brett asked his dad to teach him how to play electric bass. Bob showed him where to put his fingers on the frets and the names of the notes and away Brett went. He played with the church youth band for most of 4 years.
  • While Brett enjoyed athletics, he was never a jock. He enjoyed running in Cross Country and long distance events in Track. We called him the White Rabbit.
  • In Scouts, Brett guided by example and was there consistently. He enjoyed camping and attempting to fish. Brett had a friend who could catch a fish almost every 5 minutes. Brett tried and tried to no avail, but still had fun. He enjoyed archery and shotgun shooting.
  • In high school, Brett had his own interests, like Yogi-oh and Pokemon. He could sit at a cafeteria table and anybody could come sit with him because he was accepting of everybody.
  • When he came home between his 2nd and 3rd year of college, he was given a choice of going with his Mom and Dad to a bowling league banquet or to stay home and take care of his 1 month old nephew. He chose to take care of Buddy, his nephew.
Other than trying to put a diaper on backwards, he was great! He spent most of that summer taking care of Buddy like a new dad.
  • On Father's Day, Brett even got a dad's discount at the restaurant along with his Dad and Grandpa.
  • While at college, Brett joined the student activities board. Between running the annual Spring Carnival and the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" nights, Brett was Mr. Dependable. While working the Spring Carnival, he stayed running things and got a major sunburn while everybody else left him on his own.
  • Brett spent a lot of time doing activities with his church. Between doing dinner theatre in high school and playing the hand bells.

Memories

"My kids and I spent some wonderful times with Brett through Scouting and the East High Track and Cross Country teams. He was a joy to talk with--I had some great conversations with him. Brett didn't give up easily and when he felt challenged and even a bit frustrated, he looked up to his parents and his mentors--Dr. Sumpter, Richard Anderson and others--and Brett listened and he achieved so much. I am so sorry for your great loss."

"To the Yarberry family we share the loss of Brett who was an extraordinary young man. We remember the many times we shared Brett's presence at Sunday church services and the many accomplishments he had made in his young life. He was truly an inspiration to all young people he encountered as well as the adults who admired him. May God guide and protect his family and friends at this difficult time."

My prayers are with you for strength and courage as you move forward. I know your faith will help and pray that you feel God's comfort and peace."

"It is so sad to hear of a fellow scout's passing. He was a great example and truly an inspiration to all of those he came in contact with. We always will hold close the memories of him and his unselfish desire to help others. May the brief time we had the privilege to have him in our lives be an inspiration for us to carry on the goodness he exemplified. He will always be in our hearts."

"I knew Brett from nearly day one. I watched him grow into a fine young man. My prayers go out to his family during this time of loss and heartache. This is a picture of Brett that I took during a Sunday School hike to Mineral Palace Park back in 2007. I will miss him dearly."

"Brett was such a gentle soul; he was always willing to help in any way he could, whether in the handbell choir or with the tech team. I love the smile he would get any time Buddy came running into his arms. Brett would sweep Buddy up and hold him close. What a sweet relationship for an uncle and his nephew. Brett leaves a hole and our prayers surround your family."

“Our son, Brett, passed away unexpectedly on March 25, 2020.  He had passed out having lunch a week earlier and went to the emergency room.  They ran some tests and found nothing wrong.  A week later we found him unresponsive on the living room floor.  The paramedics were called and transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced DOA.  He was only 23 years old, and had recently started his first job working at Walmart.  He had completed 3 1/2 years of college and had a large private student loan debt.  There are also the hospital and ambulance bills that will have to be taken care of.  Brett was an amazing young man, who was always willing to lend a hand.  He was an awesome uncle, and enjoyed spending time with his 2 year old nephew.  He will be greatly missed by many.”

Update 4/16/20: We were just able to get Brett’s student loans forgiven! That was the biggest part of the bills. Thank you to all who have been praying for us during this difficult time.
